In Ancient Egypt they grew nearly all their food and thrived off it. There were over 5 million people in Egypt and every person had over 11 hundred ponds of grain. The local growing maximized production and minimized cost of the things they grew which included wheat, barley, and melons.
In today's world we usually do not grow our own food which results in higher costs and chemically modified foods being bought.
